Lady Bearcats clinch top seed in district

Emma Stevens sides safely for one of her two stolen bases against Spencer County

LAWRENCEBURG — The team that won four of five games last week is the one Brent Aldridge likes to see.

But the team that lost to Fern Creek on Saturday is the one that worries Aldridge as the post-season nears.

The Anderson County Lady Bearcats were on fire last week, winning back-t0-back District 30 contests.

“I know this team can be really good,” Aldridge said of his squad. “Unfortunately, they need to learn, most likely accept, they need to play a certain way.”

For a majority of the past week, they played that “certain way” and dominated.

Opening with district foe Woodford County, Anderson County fell behind 2-1 before kicking it into gear for a 6-2 win on Tuesday.

Aldridge called it the best game of the year for his team.

Lacey Osborne scattered eight hits in earning the victory in the circle.

Emma Stevens, Aspen Mitchell, Bailey Mitchell and Ella Baum each had two hits. Overall, the Lady Bearcats had 12 hits on the day.

Home runs came from Osborne and Baum, each having two RBI for the game.

It was back to the district wars on Thursday when the Lady Bearcats jumped on top early and scored a 14-1 victory in five innings.

Aldridge said the early barrage seemed to shock the Lady Bears.

For the game, Anderson County had 15 hits. Osborne went the distance and had three hits, including 4 RBI and two home runs, on the night.

Molly Wooldridge had two hits, including a home run, and three RBI. Faith McGregor had two hits and a solo home run.

Stevens and Aspen Mitchell also had two hits. Stevens and Aryonna Clark each have two stolen bases.

On Friday, Anderson County defeated the host Tates Creek team 15-0 in six innings.

Having faced a pitcher with not as much speed the previous game helped, said Aldridge.

The Lady Bearcats were ready and crushed 23 hits for the game. Wooldridge and Aspen Mitchell each had four hits on the night. Stevens had four RBI on two hits.

Osborne hit her 10th home run of the season as part of a two-hit, 3 RBI game.

Bailey Mitchell had three hits, while Lilliana Mefford, Paige Garland and McGregor also had two hits.

The team had 10 players with at least one hit.

Osborne struck out five and allowed just two hits for the victory.

The lone hiccup came on Saturday morning when a lackluster performance led to a 7-3 loss to Fern Creek.

Aldridge said the team had no life against a good team. That resulted in a little extra coaching in his speech prior to the finale against Butler.

The coach was disappointed by a lack of focus and not make adjustments. For example, the Lady Tigers put down four squeeze bunts without the defense adjusting.

Anderson County’s offense had only five hits on the game.

The finale of the Tates Creek event ended on a more positive note. Aldridge joked that the team may have paid attention to his extra coaching.

The Lady Bearcats defeated Butler, a perennial Sixth Region contender, 13-6 in six innings.

Aldridge was very pleased that the team had 13 hits and most were on solid at-bats.

Wooldridge fell a single shy of the cycle as she had a double, triple and home run with 6 RBI. Mefford had two hits, including a triple, and four RBI.

Aspen Mitchell had three hits and Osborne had two hits.

With Osborne taking game off from the circle, Garland scattered 11 hits to earn the victory. A couple of double plays by the defense helped erase Butler rallies.

Overall, Aldridge is very pleased with the team’s progress. He likes the way the offense is playing and Osborne gets better every game in the circle.

The Lady Bearcats are 15-8 on the season and ranks second in the power ratings for the Eighth Region behind only Oldham County.

This week, Anderson County went to Collins on Tuesday for a district game and will be on the field in Lawrenceburg tonight at 6 p.m. for the final district encounter against Shelby County.
